Morse, and later of Mrs. Apthorp. Mrs. Apthorp had come to New Haven several years before, with a family of five daughters, and to aid her in her wish to establish a boarding school for young ladies, Mr. Hillhouse proposed to move the house on to the Avenue and change it to meet her wishes. This was probably about 1824. Mrs. Apthorp's school for young ladies long had a well-deserved reputation. The writer for three years had the privilege of attending it. Of Mrs. Apthorp's five daughters, only ...three survive : the eldest, who married Dr. Horace Bushnell, still lives at the age of 95, having commenced her life January 1st, 1805 ; Miss Louisa Apthorp, now 88, and the youngest, Mrs. Head, the wife of a retired surgeon of the United States Army. In 1833-34, Deacon Nathan Whiting of the Center Church built a brick house in Hillhouse Avenue on the property where Mr. Henry F. English has recently replaced it by a much larger one. The financial depression of 1837 brought disaster to Mr. Whiting, and he left the house, which after some years was purchased by Mr.
