It was this salient feature that made it a stone of stumbling to Luther, and induced him to stigmatize it as a ''straw Epistle, " quite unworthy of a place in the sacred canon. This alleged discrepancy as to the mode of human justi fication between the teachings of Paul and James was indeed a favorite tDpic of discussion with the schoolmen of the Middle Ages.
