To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Many of the explorers were massacred by the natives, food gave out and they found no fresh supplies. After three months they abandoned the place and headed their caravels, which were now badly leaking, to- wards Hispaniola. A gale almost wrecked them, and on June 23, 1503 the ships grounded on the coast of Jamaica. From there Columbus sent two men in a canoe to San Domingo to seek aid from the new governor of Hispaniola, Nicolas de Ovando. Ovando was an enemy of Columbus, and made one excuse af...ter another for delaying aid to the little party stranded on Jamaica. It was not until a year later, in June, 1504, that he finally sent a couple of ships to take off Columbus and his men, who were almost starved and had about given up hope of res- cue. In Hispaniola there was strife and no support from the governor for further exploring expeditions. 124 Historic Ships so Columbus sailed for Spain and after a stormy voyage reached San Lucar de Barrameda on Novem- ber 7, 1504. A few days later Queen Isabella died, and there was then no one to protect the Admiral from the hostility of Fonseca.
