The minifters of France and Spairi again propofed the cardinal Zelada, whom they had invariably efteemed, and againft whom Pius foftered no prepoffeflion.
Zelada, as we have already feen, was adroit and infmuating. In peaceable times he might have been a fit perfon for the pontiff's choice: but his charater, naturally void of energy, was moreover enfeebled by age and infirmities.
