Buddhaghosa, the celebrated Buddhist commentator, goes so far as to suggest that Mahavira's doctrine of Catuyama Samvara (four-fold restraint) has some good points in it. I am told by my friend Dr. B. M. Barua, M.A., D.Litt. (London), that Dr. P. W. Thomas is inclined to assign to Mahavira the same position in relation to five earlier wandering teachers as Socrates stands in relation to the Greek sophists. Leaving aside for th...e moment the question as to whether Mahavira can be thus separated from his sophistic predecessors, it is important to ob- serve that the Buddhists distinguish these six teachers in a body from other wandering teachers of the time, as the Aiinatitthiya paribbajakas from the Brahmin Parib- bajakas.' The Buddhist word Pharusavaca can, of course, sup- ply a criterion by which we can distinguish two classes of paribbajakas. It is in reference to the six schools of philosophy and to these alone that Buddha and his contemporaries said that they were in the habit of exchanging wrangling phrases in the heat of philosophic discussion.
