The jealous rivalry between the two capitals — which dates from the union of the colonies — was not without its influence. The modern fiction of a " compact " by which the enjoyment of a state house and biennial election-parades was guaranteed to New Haven for- ever, does not appear to have yet gained even local credence ; but it was an avowed purpose of the Tolerationists, to abolish the October session and provide for the annual meeting of the gen- eral assembly alternately at Hartford and New Haven, thereby placing the two capitals, as nearly as might be, on political equality.
