First, the study was designed using the assumption that one cannot generalize findings about change over the adult ...life span using only cross-sectional data. Second, by comparing responses of groups across time, the study examines the stability of attitudes toward social responsibility. Finally, historical perspective was used to interpret the findings. The discovery that attitudes of similar age groups appear to change over time was explained by discussing the differential impact of social and historical conditions on each birth cohort.
