We shall also find that the body-guard were represented in another place. It was customary among the Persians to appear armed in the king^s pre- sence*; as in oto* courts it is necessary to wear a sword. Nor are these figures completely armed, their only weapons being a dagger, (which in the east is rarely laid aside, and being often studded with precious stones, forms a principal ornament), or a bow, enveloped in a sheath, in the same manner that Europeans wear their swords in a scabbard.
