I may, in this connection, remark that every de- mand was met and every quota filled to the close of the war, notwithstanding the situation of the county on the border of the State, and the frequent presence on her soil of armed bands of guerrillas, horse-thieves and robbers. In looking back over the situation in those troublous times, we wonder that on the whole so few lives were sacrificed in the conflict of the angry and dis- cordant elements. It speaks well tor the conservative influence of the sober, thoughtful people of the county, that the peace of •domestic life was so well preserved.
