What reading level is History And Antiquities of the Town And Neighbourhood of Uttoxeter With Notices book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
He personally related particulars of the circumstance to Mr. Clark, confectioner, of Uttoxeter. Mr. Clark was Mr. Brandon's grandson, and he told me that the stir in the town occasioned by the strange event, and the sight itself at Bear Hill, kept him so backward in doing his business, and consequently caused him to be so late home at night, that he found it necessary to relate the circumstances which had detained him to his wife and family. When he related them subsequently at any time in afte...r years he invariably associated them with Bear Hill. Adding, therefore, this straightforward account to what is related by Joseph Twigg, as to the actual locality where Doctor Johnson relieved his mind of the torture of his sense of dis- obedience to his father, all further doubt respecting it may, I think, be reasonably ended. X\t all events I am unable to procure any better information on the subject. I know that Mr. Hawthorn in his collected papers entided " Our Old Home, " which comprises the paper about his visit to Uttoxeter, disputes what is said in the first edition of this book on this point ; but the very indifferent way in which he made inquiries about the object of his special visit to the town, clearly shows that whilst we may be attracted by the charm of his writing and the beauty of his sentiments, little reliance can be placed upon what he has merely imagined respecUng the identity of the site of Doctor Johnson's penance.
