His address was in the histor...ical line, and extracts are presented below : — Through the joint action of the committees having in charge the exercises of this day, I have been assigned a part, in which it becomes my pleasant and grateful duty to thank the people of Ashfield for the cordial welcome which has been so gracefully offered, and especially to congratulate them on the possession of that spirit which alone made this gathering possible As yet, I have found no sponsor for your name of Ashfield. It may have been named, as, ac- cording to tradition, were the towns of Athol, Orange, Cole- raine, Shelburne, Montague and Warwick, after some titled Englishman, in consideration for a church bell which he was to present to the town honored by his name Now, 238 Field Meeting— 1886.
