" Prior to the Revolution, the Presbyterian churches con- tinued to increase by a gradual process, throughout many of the original thirteen States ; arid with the formation of new churches, presbyteries and synods were established, which held ecclesiastical jurisdiction over them. In Vir- ginia, they were much persecuted by the Episcopalians, who went so far, in 1618, as to enact by their House of Burgesses, that if any person came within the colony, and claimed to be a clergyman, and attempted... to preach or perform any other clerical duty, without being able to show a testimonial that he had been ordained by an En- glish diocesan bishop, he was to be expelled from the limits of the colony. By the operation of this law the Presbyte- rian clergy were entirely excluded from Virginia for a long series of years. When the Revolution broke out, many of the most emi- nent patriots of the era were Presbyterians. Among these were John Witherspoon, who took a prominent part in securing the passage of the Declaration of Independence ; and George Duffield, who was a chaplain in the Continen- tal army.
