D. , which, according to the translator's own confession (see the Prologue), is often only an arbitrary recasting of the original. It is to be regretted that the translation which Jerome made as an offset to that of Rufinus, ^ and for which he claimed literal fidelity, ^ has been lost with the exception of a considerable number of fragments contained in the Epistle to Avitus.
