To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Only one of them has, as yet, been published.' It dates from the year 1012, a time when the sufferings of the English people under the scourge of the Danish invasion had reached their summit. The homilist, with deep feeling, laments the irreligion and immoral lives of the people, as the cause of their sorrows, and proclaims the greater punishment that impends, the coming of Anti- christ, the end of the world. All this is presented with less literary finish and less art than by Aelfric; yet with... its plain popular tone, it is rich in life and colour. Aelfric had rendered in the English language a part of the Old Testament, and, in his homihes, had given at least the pericopes from the New, and it was not long before a com- plete translation of the Gospels appeared. Translators also directed their industry to writings of more questionable value, as the so-called Evangelium Nicodemi, which was probably turned into English in the first half of the eleventh • century. A knowledge of the Latin language had been unquestion- ably advanced and extended by the efforts of Aethelwold and Aelfric.
