General Chemicheff left the Lower Elbe; and having learned, while lying between Magdebuig and the Have...l, that the Westphalian general Ochs was at Hal- berstadt on the left bank of the Elbe, with a convoy of artillery, he resolved to surprise him. Having forthwith crossed the river with his indefatigable hussars and Cossacks, on the evening of the 29th May, he marched all day and night, and at five on the following morning reached the- enemy, thirteen Qerman, or nearly fifty English, miles distant. The surprise was complete ; and, although a desperate resistance was made, it terminated in the capture- or destruction of the whole enemy's de^ tachment, twelve hundred strong, with fourteen pieces of cannon.
