Before leaving Princeton, in 1828, Dr. Nevin had been selected to fill the chair of Biblical Literature in the Western Theological Seminary in Allegheny, where he labored for twelve years. Having been ordained to the ministry he supplied neighboring congregations, and also edited a paper, called The Friend. Many of his sermons were published, and he became widely known for ...strength and courage. Having become interested in German litera- ture he persevered until he was able to read the language with remarkable fluency. He was, indeed, among the first in this country to plead for the more general study of German philosophy and theology.
In 1835 Dr. Nevin was married to Martha, second daughter of the Hon. Eobert Jenkins, of Windsor Place, Lancaster county. She proved a worthy consort to her distinguished husband, whom she survived; and for her talents, her culture, and her genial hospitality she is still respectfully remembered.
