When she was a small child her mother died and she was reared to womanhood in the home of her uncle, George L. Leak, near Lizton. She attended high school at Lizton and at Lebanon; graduated from the teachers' course at the Central Normal Col- lege, and took about two years at the State Normal at Terre Haute. She also taught eight years in the public schools of this county, most of the time at Lizton.
