During the fall and winter months, he attended the district schools, and being ambitious to acquire an education applied himself to his studies with such assuidity that he was not long in mastering the elementary branches. Having an ambition to tit himself for the pro- fession of teaching, he subsequently attended DePauw University, where he took a classical course. He remained in that University four years, during which time his standing as a student and orator and debater 642 HISTORY OF JVIAD...ISON COUxNTY was highly creditable alike to himself and the school. He was a mem- ber of the Sigma. Chi Fraternity.
After leaving University he was employed as a teacher in the public schools at Brazil, Indiana, and afterwards in the capacity of superin- tendent, the duties of which position he discharged with eminent satis- faction to the school board and the patrons of the schools. His services as an edueator were sought in other cities and in 1884 he accepted a proposition from the school board of Frankton in Madison county to' superintend the schools.
