August 21, 1840, the Preachers' Aid Society of the Providence Conference was organized in Chest- nut Street Church. Rev. B. Otheman was Chair- man, and Rev. A. Stevens, Secretary. This year the Providence was set off from the New England Conference. Father Merrill leaving the charge some months before Conference, to take charge of a church in Lowell where some difficulties had arisen, Rev. W. H. Brewster was employed as a supply. He was, at the time, a member of the New Hampshire Con- ference, ...and was stationed at Haverhill, which place he left to serve this church. He was beloved by the people generally ; and an earnest effort was made by the brethren to secure his transfer to the Providence Conference, and appointment to this charge. The Conference held its session in this church ; it being the first session of the Providence Conference. A Committee from the church, composed of Hezekiah Anthony and others, waited on the Bishops, Hed- ding and Soule, and urged Mr. Brewster's trans- fer as a necessity.
