A new Parliament having to be elected in that year, Cromartyshire had the choice of the representative, and departing from the traditional custom, elected a stranger — William Pulteney — who sat till the Parliament expired in 1774, Mr Pulteney was really a Johnstone of Dumfries, but having married the heiress of Daniel Pulteney, first cousin of William Earl of Bath, he assumed the name of Pulteney and dropped that of Johnstone. He was a man of enormous wealth, commonly reputed to be one of the ...richest subjects in Great Britain. He hoped to be retained for Nairnshire when it came to be its turn to elect, and with that view he acquired an electoral qualification as a freeholder of two davochs of land at Auldearn. His procurator was Hugh Kose of Aitnoch, who was the liferenter of the two davochs, Mr Pulteney being only entitled to exercise the vote in the absence pf the liferenter.
