Barnard lingered for some weeks, but event- ually died of his wounds. Hot pursuit was made, but the enemy escaped. Pynchon in reporting this disaster states "Dearefeild men & a parcel of N'^'ampton men, y* had bene vp y® River, being just come in, went out after j"^ imediately, about thirty or forty men in al (beside more y* followed from Hatfield & N"').
