The naval force upon Lake Erie should at first have been placed under a separate command, as Ghauncey had his hands full upon Lake Ontario, and of course could give but little attention to the operations on Lake Erie. Again, the men should have been sent direct from Philadelphia, instead of round by New York and Sackett's Harbor to Erie — making nearly double the distance. Many of the carpenters, sailmakers, block...makers, &c, came from Philadelphia, then why not the seamen ? Had this course been pursued, Perry would have been on the lake with his squadron and captured the enemy's fleet before they could have got out their large ship, "Detroit;" as also have co-operated with Harrison, and relieved the western end of the lake of the continued harassing they suffered. Once supreme upon the lake, the enemy would have withdrawn his forces to Maiden and the Detriot River. Perry having established a recruiting station on shore to enlist landsmen from the troops, with the permission of the com- manding officer, had succeeded in getting about one hundred.
