A voluminous correspondence now commenced and many interviews took place between Las Cases and Sir Hudson Lowe. The former says in his Journal, referring to this pe- riod, that a state of inactivity and passiveness did not agree with the nature of his disposition ; and he certainly gave proof of this in the numerous letters which he addressed from Ross Cottage to the Governor, who replied sometimes verb- ally and sometimes in writing.
