" If I should place a third teacher in the list, it would be Jacob F. Holt. With him I never had any personal relations, but I felt him to be the best teacher we had. There was a solemn substance to his teaching which left an ineffaceable impression." In the educational life of Philadelphia President Riche played an influential part. He was the first President of the Teachers' Institute, and by his example as well as his counsel he kept his Faculty in touch with the activities of the day. In 18...69 the Artisans' Night School was estab- lished as the capstone of that system of public evening classes which the city has learned to esteem so highly, and its first principal was the accomplished head of the Central High School. The three principals of the school (Riche, Hopper, and Christine) and a large proportion of the Faculty have been drawn from the teaching force of the High School. The movement towards manual training, as first pre- sented, was an educational novelty with which President Riche seems to have lacked sympathy.
