Since the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, France had gained a considerable ascendency in the councils of the United Provinces, and was supported by the party adverse to the house of Orange* During the seven years* war the states had maintained a neutraUty, and in the American contest had displayed such an evident partiality towards France and the rebellious colonies, as involved them in hostilities with England. This war promoted the ascendency of France ; the conclusion of the disputes with the emperor led to a formal alliance, which was signed at Fontainbleau, November 10.
