Sir, — The period of your intended departure for England being so near, the undersigned, residents of this Colony, beg hereby to express the high respect they entertain for you in that elevated and most important official station which you have so long and so ably occupied here. The satisfactory administration of the Uw in this place is infinitely more difficult than may be imagined by those who have not had an opportunity of witnessing the proceedings in Court. Perplexity is too often experienced from coufiicting testimony on the part of Chinese witnesses, as well as from im- perfect interpretation.
