As a private banker he leaves a proud name, not in America alone, but through all Christendom — a name accredited where commerce carries a flag or sends an adventurer. To have done this was to have lived to some purpose ; but he did more. As a patriot he lived long enough to subscribe his name to the Ordinance of Seces- sion of the state of South Carolina; this has made his name historic. And might he not have said as the prophet of old: 'Now lettest Thy servant depart in peace.
