The Elector's officials always evaded the real point. Meanwhile the difficulties of the Reformed increased. The Reformed consistory was almost broken up in 1700. The faithful Fabricius died, 1696, Wie- denbach was dismissed, and Achenbach, after being dis- missed, accepted a call to be court preacher of the King of Prussia, and only Heiles and Hauser, together with the aged Secretary, Kreuz, remained. Dragonnades, whicli had been common in Germersheim, Neustadt and Lantern, now began to be carr...ied on in all parts of the land. It looked as if the Reformed were about to suffiir in the Palatinate, as the Reformed in France had suffered fifteen PKUSSIA^S REPRISALS. 281 years before. And it looked as if the Reformed would be driven out of the Palatinate, as they had been out of France. Many of the Protestants were brought to beg- gary, many put in prison and made to subsist on bread and water without being permitted to see the light of day. Finally the Prussian ambassador, dissatisfied with the evasions of the Elector, gave an ultimatum, and left Heidelberg in 1700.
