What book would not be found to betray some flaws under such an ordeal as it had to face ? Textual criticism, the knowledge of history, literary taste, were all of them more developed and more exacting than they had been when the revision was made. The Con- gregation of 1568, coming after Cardinal Quignonez, had worked at a time of reaction, when circumspection was peculiarly necessary ; a fresh body of revisers might venture on bolder courses without being rash.
