He commanded his Battalion in the fights at Greeneville, Tennessee, Morristown, Carter's Depot and Bull's Gap. Grayson was a prominent citizen of Johnson county when the war came and a man at that time of probably 35 years of age. He was among the first to recruit any considerable number of men in his county for the Fed- eral service, taking with him at one time 100 men to Ken- tucky. This was in May, 1862.
