, a variety suitable for cigars. This variety has been attempted in some of the Tidewater counties, and has been grown on Ragland's seed farm in Halifax County, but has never been cultivated to any considerable extent in the state. It should not be classed with Virginia tobacco.
In the Census Report of 1880, Virginia tobacco is clas- sified by R. L. Ragland into five distinct types, viz. , I. Dark Shippings; 2. Red and Colored Shippings; 3. Sun and Air-cured Fillers; 4. Bright Yellow Wrappers a
...nd Fillers; 5. Orange and Mahogany Flue-cured Manufacturing. These are again subdivided into as many as 18 smaller classes, e. G. , the Red and Colored Shipping is divided into three classes: I. Bright spangled; 2. Mahogany; 3. Cherry red. The Dark Shipping into I. Dark, rich waxy, English leaf; 2. Nutmeg and Mahogany leaf, English and Conti- nental, etc.
This classification is exhaustive and would embrace all classes produced to-day. The numerous classes are not to be understood, however, as so many new varieties intro- duced between 1875 anc * 1880.
