At this meeting Alexander Swee- ney, Dr. Joseph Templeton, and Dr. F. Julius Le Moyne were appointed a committee to prepare an address for the next meeting. This meeting was held in August, the same year, and the address was deliv- ered. It was ordered published in Our Country, in which paper it appeared on the 13th of August, and occupied five columns. The formation of this society, and the attempt to disseminate its principles, roused a violent opposition, which showed itself first in the holding of public meet- ings in Washington, at which resolutions were passed denouncing the abolition movement and those engaged in it, and afterwards in an evident determination to suppress free speech in Washington, at least so far as concerned the enunciation of anti-slavery doctrines.
