To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
At the end of the second century from the landing of the Pilgrims, the old Puritan churches in Massa- chusetts seemed to be about to become extinct. Almost all of its old strongholds had capitulated to another and less ascetic sect. Out of eight Puritan churches built in Boston during the first century of its existence, seven had gone over to the enemy. The Old South alone remained steadfast. In the very pulpits where those old Puritan divines, John Cotton, the Mathers, John Davenport, the Coop...ers, and the Thachers taught the Puritan faith, another sect taught another doctrine to the children's children of the original founders. The same religious revolt had been going on throughout the State; in Salem, in Ro^ibury, in Cambridge, in Hingham, in Plymouth, and in other places, so that in many towns there was not left a solitary Puritan church to mark the former existence of the Pilgrims. Harvard College had struck to the foe, and old Massachusetts was no longer swayed by the Puritans. The children one by one had dropped away from the cold and gloomy asceticism of the old church, and at last, at the end of the second century from the commencement of the religious experiment, the balance sheet showed it to 11* 126 PILGRIHISM.
