4 et seq. 'Hor. Sat. II. i. 34; cf. Odes, III. xxx. 10. 138 HORACE AND HIS AGE tainly, in early life, the city had powerful attractions for him. He tells us ^ how he spent his days there, when he loved to wander round the market-place, and ask the price of vege- tables, and stop to listen to the charlatans of the Forum, This was probably before Maecenas had given him the gift of the Sabine farm {c. 34 B.C.),* which was to exercise so powerful an influence on his genius, and so largely colour hi...s poetry. But even after the gift had been made, the city seems to have held its spell over him, though he is fully conscious ' of the restraints and annoyances of city-life, and at times can display genu- ine enthusiasm * for the country. He retires ' there from the licence of the Saturnalia, with the Greek Comic poets for his companions, and it is clear that he regards this journey to his retreat among the Sabine hills {in monies et in arcem),^ as one to a citadel of peace from "the smoke and wealth and din of Rome ".
