It is true that the dwelhngs belonging to the East End Dwelhngs Company and to the Peabody Trustees are not contiguous ; the Census, moreover, does not give the propor- tion of the several areas which is used for residential purposes. There is no desire, therefore, to press any argument based on these figures. They suggest, however, that a large district, such as Bethnal Green, which is chiefly residential in character, may, without sanitary disadvantage, accom- modate an increased population by the gradual substitution of new and improved houses for the small cottages which at present largely occupy the ground.
