The lower road takes one, after ten minutes' walking, almost within sight of Bear Pond, a pretty little lakelet half a mile wide. A mile beyond Bear Pond this road runs through a clearing filled with sawdust and trimmings made by cutting up birch for spools ; thence a mile and a half more to the east end or head of First Buttermilk Pond, the lat- ter part of the way through a fine beech and maple grove.
