Every successive convulsion and revolution in Asia served to increase their power. The Greeks and the Romans, divided and contending with each other, could make no serious resistance. This daring adventurer was succeeded by eight military lead- ers, whose genius was equalled only by their triumphs. On all sides of them, wherever they went, to raise the sword was the same thing as to conquer.
