At the head of these inspired youths stood George Bessenyey, whose career illustrates that of his nation. In Vienna there awoke within him a feeling of his own intellectual poverty and that of his nation, and a passionate desire to educate both himself and his country. For ten years he studied languages, literature and Western ideas, and then set about instructing all who surrounded him. Bessenyey's companions amongst the Royal troops became im- mortal as the vanguard of the new Hungarian liter...ature and culture. Of these were Alexander Baroczy, translator of Mdrmontel and Calprenede, to whom Hungarian prose owes much of its euphony and fame. Meanwhile in the country itself Joseph Peczeli, the enthusiastic cleric of Komarom, joined the new school. Nicholas Revai, the great comparative philo- logist, was conspicuous among the poets of the Latin School which came into vogue at this time ; also Benedict Virag, who besides his poems wrote a history of the Hungarian centuries {Magyar Szdzadok) .
