The noises rose and fell — the groaning and clicking of frogs, the squawk of a night heron, the quer...ulous cry of a raccoon, the far-off bark of an owl, a sudden crashing in the underbrush. And then there came that call. It was a wild scream, a coughing cry. So fierce, so untamed, that even the chuck-will's-widow ceased on a half note, and momentarily there was pulsating silence as the creatures paused, c|uivering, and listened. The bobcat was at its hunting.
Somewhere among the canes there crouched a bi'owii, furry animal, a short-tailed cat three feet long. It came on huge soft feet through the devious paths of the cane into the more open places of tlic forest, through the feras, sniffing, hunting.
