OCCUPATIONS AND INDUSTRIES 145 The cultivation oj opium in the Amoy District.
The area devoted to the cultivation of opium in this district has been pretty well confined to the counties of Tong-an, An-khoe, Chin-kang, Lam-an, Hvyeian, Tio-thoa, Chang-pu, and Eng-chhun chin.
These districts are reported to have raised as much as 9310 piculs (over 600 tons) in one year. Add to this the amount that was imported from India and other provinces in China and the quantity would be easily doubled, valued at $18,000,000 Mex, and this is a very conservative estimate.
