With a smile the shepherd or shepherdess would signal us forward—not to drive around but into the herd.
The first time we did this, it seemed no less weird than dangerous. With every centimeter we’d move forward, we’d anticipate the moment when the car would touch the sheep, lambs’ legs would flatten under the wheels, wool would fly.
