" (Get up !) and they had to get up and troop away two hundred yards in the cold and the darkness to washing-sheds, which had less than one tap to a hundred persons, no hot water and no protection from draughts.
The people in the horse-boxes, when they got rid of the smell of the filth and the smell of their predecessors, the horses, were rather better off, for their six bunks were arranged in two tiers round three sides of the box, which had a table and iron garden chairs and the luggage of its occupants in the middle.
