She shuts her aching eyes to pore over a mental picture of that great green panorama, with its background of mountains — rose and violet and sun-streaked. She sees the noble line of aqueducts touched with the golden fingers of the sinking sun — the quivering radiance lingering upon crumbling stones and trembling grasses. She watches the herds of patient dun-coloured cattle, marching slowly by, beautiful beasts with wide-spreading horns and velvet eyes. Here and there among them she remembers to... have noticed a few of the melancholy and ugly buffaloes, ragged and short-legged, snorting as they walked with their heavy heads downbent. Then how lovely were the flocks of snowy sheep, with their picturesque shepherds in attendance — hand- some, dark-eyed men and boys, with pointed hats and red waistcoats ! There was one great white dog who allowed her to pat him as he walked alongside. What a day of delights it was ! There were lovely goats, too, wandering among the ruins — animals with silky long hair; 90 A SUCCESSFUL INTRUSION and she recalls one — for no detail of that day is forgotten — who stood on top of a ruin and peered down through a chink at herself and her companion, with bright inquisitive eyes.
