" Although every man of Israel had been trained in the art of war from his youth up, there wasn't a sword or a spear among them except those borne by Saul and his son Jonathan. No wonder that part of them stampeded and hid themselves in caves, and in the thickets, and in the high places and in the rocks, or that others fled over to the other side of the Jordan. Only a trembling tithe remained with Saul at Gilgal, where the com- ing of Samuel was looked for. Seven days went by and Samuel did not come.
