They become centres in a small way of law and order. More- over, the power of calling forth water is the surest claim 10 I30 IN THE DESERT the French could advance to the respect of the desert tribes. Every one, in the Sahara at least, understands the language of artesian wells. The Algerian desert consists of two fairly distinct zones, the Western, or High Sahara, which is a rocky or stony plateau, stretching westward into Morocco ; and the Eastern, or Low Sahara, extending into Tunisia. This ...Low Sahara forms the northern part of that great depression, seven hundred miles from north to south by from three to four hundred miles broad, the drainage of which, gathered by distant converging rivers, is concen- trated in the Oued Rir ; the Rir valley itself leading down to the shotts, which are the deepest part of the depression and still beneath sea-level. These grada- tions are, of course, too gradual and on too vast a scale to be perceptible. You have no idea, as you gaze southward from the shott across an apparently level stretch of desert, that you are looking up a long gradual incline which culminates in a great range of mountains in the middle of the Sahara ; nor that, from all round, the slope trends downward to this lowest point.
