Tench Coxe described workers who were gardeners and small farmers when they were not following their trade. When the demand for shoes failed, the shoemaker, for instance, was not totally unemployed. He had other work. The produce of his garden, his chickens and pig and cow, the posses- sion of a home for which he paid little or no rent, gave him a security which his great-grandchildren en- tirely lack, unless they, too, dwell in small villages.
