James Tolfree, a resident of Ithaca, and native of England, who had been a close friend of the Gauntletts in Portsmouth, induced the uncle and aunt to re- move from their New Jersey home to Ithaca. They brought their nephew with them and gave him such an education as was obtainable in Ithaca until he was fourteen. He was then boun...d as an apprentice to learn the book-binding trade with Mack & Andrus in Ithaca. The apprenticeship document was signed by the boy, his uncle, Ebenezer Mack and William Andrus. It is now highly prized and carefully preserved by his son, John C. Gauntlett. It prohibited him from marry- ing and from doing any thing of importance, except in the interest of his masters, for six years and one month, at which time he would be just 21 years of age. He was to receive $25 and two suits of clothes at his majority and his board and living necessities during the period of his apprenticeship.
