One of the many areas in which we are working is the area of guardianship. In dealing with the issues surrounding guardianship m Illinois we faced several challenges 1] maintaining individual freedom and dignity, 2] lack of resources. 3] inappropriate application of resources, and 4] coordinating the many disciplines involved in this issue (i. E. Medical, legal, human service systems, and individual family members) .
Research and experience acquired by the Illinois Protective Service Coalition (IPSC) indicated that the most effective way to improve advocacy for those individuals with the most severe impairments was to train their guardians to be effective and responsive.
