I think she ended up teaching American Studies someplace. [Early American History at CSU Sacramento] We issued a mimeographed catalogue for the course, containing the topics and descriptions of the course seminars that the teaching assistants were going to give. The students could choose among these and among the TAs if they knew them. And if they didn t want to study in any of the seminars, fine; there was the regular course, with exams that took the form of papers. Thus, you could just be in ...the old-fashioned lecture course. Well, this method really worked for me as long as I was teaching at Berkeley. I think for the graduate students it was a maturing experience. But now, down to the theoretical bottom line in terms of instruction, the important point was that the graduate student had an intermediate position in two ways. Firstly, he or she was part of a new culture with new issues. He had questions on his mind which were on the minds of the undergraduates and surely not on mine. Secondly, the graduate student was a preprofessional.
