" This is the alternative which is ultimately forced upon us by the question whether to pray or not to pray. From intellectual perplexity there is no complete escape, whichever solution of the mystery of life we elect. To the moral certainty which the problem yields, one of the greatest names in contemporary science has just left us his posthumous testimony that there is " a vacuum in the soul of man which nothing can fill but faith in God."^ Of this faith the vital breath is prayer.
